Popocatepetl and Iztaccíhuatl are active volcanoes between Mexico City and Puebla. One legend suggests the lovely madien Izta died of grief when a rival Tlaxcalteca claimed her beloved Popo had died in battle. When Popo returned, he carried Izta away and knelt to forever watch over her. The gods turned them into volcanoes to symbolize their burning love. The Rival was turned into the volcano Citlaltépetl some distance away but with a clear view of lovers.
