It is believed that monks arrived to Cuetzalan around the year 1552 to 1555. Respecting the original names, each town name was just modified in order to put a Saint's name after the original Nahuatl version. So The town that was originally named Quetzalan (i comes from the bird's name) was named San Francisco de Quetzalan, because it was St. Francis Monks the one that arrived to this place. This church has been modified many times, the first church builted here was inaugurated in 1704, and in 1904 the construction of the actual church began. It didnt open its doors until the 1950s. It has Roman style and two rooms each aside the main building. It is here where the main tower stands and it is there were the bells are.
