The ceremony of the Voladores de Papantla is a cultural tradition of the Totonac people of Veracruz. The tradition dates back to ancient times and has been passed down through the generations. The voladores, "fliers," sometimes called hombres pajaro, "bird men," launch themselves from the top of a pole of up to 150 feet in height, and slowly descend circling the pole. It is a breathtaking spectacle performed at a great height.
The ritual begins with five men circling a tall pole. One of the men plays music with a flute and a small drum. They then climb the pole, and position themselves on a small wooden rotating platform at the top. The man playing the music is called the caporal. He stands in the center, playing his flute and drum, and does a dance, facing each of the four cardinal directions in turn. This is one of the most tense moments for the audience as he performs his dance standing at the top of a pole without a harness or any protection.

Image Description: La danza del volador es una especie de prólogo a la ceremonia de vuelo, que se halla extendida desde la región huasteca de México hasta Nicaragua, en América Central. Tanto la danza, que consiste en un taconeo no muy distinto al usado en la danza de los Viejitos y en la de los Negritos, como la ceremonia ritual que sigue a continuación, son ejecutadas por cinco hombres, según algunos representan las cinco direcciones del mundo: los cuatro puntos cardinales y la que va de la tierra al cielo. Esta última dirección la representa un alto poste de hasta treinta metros, que es el punto focal de la ceremonia. Esta probablemente es un rito relacionado con el calendario indígena, cuyo síglo era de cincuenta y dos años, número que resulta de multiplicar las trece vuelts que se deben efectuar durante el descenso, por los cuatro "voladores" que lo llevan a cabo. La ceremonia puede comenzar desde el acto de la elección del árbol que se va a utilizar para fabricar el poste.
