The facade of Atlixco's Capilla de la Tercer Orden de San Francisco (Chapel of the Third Order of San Francisco). The Baroque façade boasts delicate mortar work with indigenous influences and plant and geometric decorations stand out, as do niches with sculptures of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Francis of Assisi. The chapel, dedicated to those who follow Franciscan rules without belonging to the clergy, is a prime example of baroque mortar style, a popular architectural style in Puebla, and it is remarkably preserved. Founded likely as a hermitage in the 16th century, the current structure shows construction phases spanning from the 17th century to the early 18th century. Included in the declaration of the Historic Monuments Zone of Atlixco since 1988, the Chapel of the Third Order is a tangible testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.
