The nave of Atlixco Iglesia de Santa Cecilia (Temple of Saint Cecilia). The church was closed on our last visit in 2018. A 7.1 Magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico 19 September 2017, in Puebla state, Atlixco experienced lots of collapsing buildings and the temple was severely damaged. The church was founded by Friar Juan Adriano between 1589 and 1593. It is the third foundation of the clergy in the town of Atlixco, and the founding of its convent took place in the last decade of the 16th century, under the command of Friar Melchor de Vargas. The mission of the Augustinians was not to evangelize the Indians, but rather to introduce the Creole inhabitants of this municipality to their order and assist in their devotions. The interior of the church has a single nave of narrow, high proportions, with a transept and a dome. On the walls of the upper cloister are repainted images of The Baptism, The Conversion, and The Burial of Saint Augustine by Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez.
