Coursetia madrensis

Coursetia madrensis inhabiting road cuts and adjacent seasonally dry tropical forests (selva baja caducifolia) 9 miles southeast of Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla, Mexico. Coordinates: 18.495927, -98.397192, 1320 m elev. Collected 1 June 1986 by Matt Lavin 5835A and Melissa Luckow (specimen voucher at TEX). Like all species of the legume genus Coursetia, Coursetia madrensis is often most abundant on unstable slopes (e.g., of arroyos and road cuts). This species is distinguished among Coursetia species by having imparipinnate leaves, flowers that do not undergo post-pollination resupination, an ovary that is conspicuously hairy, and large reddish flowers (standard petal 2-2.5 cm long) indicative of bird pollination. iPhone photo of a Kodachrome slide.
