Coursetia madrensis

Coursetia madrensis inhabiting road cuts and adjacent seasonally dry tropical forests (selva baja caducifolia) 7 km southeast of Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla, Mexico. Coordinates: 18.528201, -98.419966, 1370 m elev. Collected 20 June 1985 by Rafael Torres 6893 and Matt Lavin (specimen voucher at MEXU). Like all species of the legume genus Coursetia, Coursetia madrensis is often most abundant on unstable slopes (e.g., of arroyos and road cuts). This species is distinguished among Coursetia species by having imparipinnate leaves, flowers that do not undergo post-pollination resupination, an ovary that is conspicuously hairy, and large reddish flowers (standard petal 2-2.5 cm long) indicative of bird pollination. iPhone photo of a Kodachrome slide.
